A player in possession of the ball engages one or two direct opponents and attempts to directly bypass them with the ball to create retention or progression opportunities.

          1v1 take-on

A player on the ball engages one direct opponent and makes a deliberate attempt to drive past the opponent with the ball.

          1v2 take-on

A player on the ball engages two direct opponents and makes a deliberate attempt to drive past the opponents with the ball.

          Indirect pressure

Whilst performing a take-on, a player is under pressure from an opponent trying to close down the space and control the direction in which their action can be executed. The opposition player is not within an appropriate distance to compete for possession and is not attempting to directly recover possession themselves.

          Direct pressure

Whilst performing a take-on, a player is under clear pressure from an opponent, who is actively attempting to disrupt or compete for possession.

          Inside

A player makes a deliberate attempt to drive past an opposition player(s) towards the centre of the pitch.

          Outside

A player makes a deliberate attempt to drive past an opposition player(s) away from the centre of the pitch.

          Opposition beaten

When the player performing a take-on clearly progresses past the opposition player(s) and the opposition player(s) can only exert pressure from behind.

          Incomplete

When the player performing a take-on loses possession of the ball, or when the opposition player(s) can still exert pressure from the side or front.
