These movements can often be the reason why the player is able to receive and therefore must be identified and recorded.
In front typically refers to midfielders dropping back to receive from the defenders in front of the opposition’s first unit line.
An out-to-in movement occurs when a player goes from a position outside the opposition team shape into a more central area inside the team shape, attempting to disturb the opposition’s structure. Examples include wingers who drift from the outer channel to the inner channel to receive the ball between the lines.
Players can also receive the ball in behind. An example of this is when a striker takes up a position level with the opposition’s deepest defender and runs in behind to receive a ball that breaks the lines.
In front
A player has performed a movement to receive the ball in front of the first unit of the opposition team shape. The player must begin their movement from beyond the opposition’s first unit or highest attacking player.
In to out
A player has performed a movement from inside the opposition team shape to outside the opposition team shape to receive the ball.
Out to in
A player has performed a movement from outside the opposition team shape to inside the opposition team shape to receive the ball.
In between
A player has performed a movement to receive the ball within or between two units, inside the opposition team shape.
In behind
A player has performed a movement to receive the ball in behind the opposition final unit.
From final unit
A player has performed a movement starting in line with the opposition final unit to receive the ball in behind the opposition final unit.
In front of final unit
A player has performed a movement starting from a position in front of the opposition final unit to receive the ball in behind the opposition final unit.
Pushing the line
A player has performed a movement to receive the ball in behind the opposition final unit. The movement has been tracked by an opposition player in the final unit, which then pushes the unit line deeper and creates space in front.
Come and go
A player has performed a movement away from the opposition final unit towards their own goal before turning and then making a countermovement to receive the ball in behind. The movements must be continuous.
Offside to onside
A player has performed a movement to receive the ball in front of the opposition final unit, having started in an offside position.
