The FIFA Technical Study Group created a Futsal Analysis Framework to form the basis of the tournament analysis offering an unparalleled level of data that seeks to challenge or support the perceptions of game play and individual participation. With data collected across all 52 matches at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Lithuania 2021, this is the first time there has been such a comprehensive review of every second of every game in futsal.

In possession

When a player from a team is in controlled possession of the ball

Goalkeeper distribution

The distribution of the ball by the goalkeeper either from a re-start or from open play.

Build-up unopposed

The team are preparing the attack in zone 1 and zone 2 with all 4 opposition players between the ball and their goal. The opposition are in a mid or low block and no pressure is applied to the ball carrier.

Build-up opposed

The team are preparing the attack in zone 1 and zone 2. The opposition are in a high press state and pressure is being applied to the ball carrier.

Direct attack

A long pass or throw from zone 1 or zone 2 towards the opposition half against an organised defence.

Attacking phase

Attacking possession phase in the opposition half (zone 3 and 4) with the intention of creating a scoring opportunity.

Attacking phase power play

Attacking possession phase in the opposition half (zone 3 and 4) with the intention of creating a scoring opportunity with an outfield player as goalkeeper.

Restart counter-attack (GK or kick-in)

Starting from a goalkeeper re-start or kick-in, a quick attack where the opposition are in a recovery unorganised defensive state.

Counter-attack (open play)

After regaining possession of the ball, a quick attack where the opposition are in a recovery unorganised defensive state and space is exploited.

Out of possession

When a player from the opposition team has controlled possession of the ball

High block

Two or more players positioned in zone 4 and/or 3, no initial pressure is being applied to the ball carrier.

High press

Two or more players positioned in zone 4 and/or 3, pressure is being applied to the ball carrier.

Mid block

Three or more players positioned in zone 3 and/or 2, no initial pressure is being applied to the ball carrier.

Mid press

Three or more players positioned in zone 3 and/or 2, pressure is being applied to the ball carrier.

Low block

All four players are positioned in their own half but at least two players are in or close to zone 1.

Low block powerplay

All four players are positioned in their own half. The opposition are in an attacking phase powerplay state with an outfielder player goalkeeper.

Recovery

After losing possession of the ball, the players are returning to their own half in an unorganised defensive state.

Counter press

After losing possession of the ball, the player(s) immediately put pressure on the ball carrier in an attempt to instantly regain possession of the ball.

Set plays

A distribution action to restart the play from either a corner, freekick, kick-in, 10m freekick, kick-off or penalty

Corners

The phase of play following a corner kick.

Attacking free kicks

An attempt at goal or a combination to create an attempt at goal from a free kick.

10m free kick

A free kick from the 10m mark awarded for every subsequent direct foul when the opposition have already made 5 direct fouls in a half.

Penalty

A penalty kick from the 6m mark.

Attacking kick-ins

The phase of play following an attacking kick in from zone 3 and/or 4.

Kick-off

The phase of play following a kick-off.
