Nadine Angerer is a former Germany goalkeeper and current goalkeeping coach with NWSL side Portland Thorns.

She won 146 international caps, and the former Bayern Munich shot-stopper went through the entire 2007 Women’s World Cup without conceding a goal, saving a crucial penalty kick from Brazil’s Marta in the final.

She has won the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ twice (2003, 2007) is a five-time winner of the women’s European Championships (1997, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2013) and has won Olympic bronze medals three times. In 2013, she was the first goalkeeper (male or female) to be named FIFA World Player of the Year.

Nadine is passionate about goalkeeper coaching, and particularly loves working with goalkeepers in their development phase.

Angerer is looking forward to seeing how goalkeepers make decisions during this tournament.

“The game is so fast now, so the pressure on the goalkeeper to make quick and correct decisions is increasing.”, she said. “What are the responses during high pressure and low pressure and what is the distribution like in these situations? I like to see if decision-making is integrated into the pre-match warm-up also. It’s interesting to see the different approaches by each team, and also if goalkeeping styles are different across the confederations.

“I’m also keen to see how the goalkeepers integrate with the philosophy of the head coach and how they want the team to play. Is the team playing to strengths of the goalkeeper or is the goalkeeper having to adapt to the way their team is playing? This can be very important.”

Angerer feels the goalkeeper position has evolved significantly in the past decade, and she is looking forward to seeing what trends emerge from FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023. She will observe games in Sydney and Perth.
